The Chicago Humanities Festival’s mission is to create opportunities for people of all ages to support, enjoy and explore the humanities. The 24th annual fall festival features a variety of events that center around this year’s theme: What Makes Us Human.

The festival brings together novelists, scholars, musicians, archaeologists, historians, artists, performers, playwrights, theologians, poets, architects, policy makers, and others – both established and emerging talents – to offer performances, screenings, exhibits and discussions.

ANIMAL SECRETS

September 21, 2013 – January 21, 2014

Where does a chipmunk sleep? What does an eagle feed its young? How do mother bats find their babies in a cave? Animal Secrets offers guests the chance to explore and discover the hidden habitats and secret lives of forest animals.

Using imaginative role-play and hands-on, interactive activities, guests will get a glimpse of nature from an animal’s point of view in naturalistic environments. The exhibit is divided into sections, including a stream, meadow woodland, cave and naturalists’ tent, to portray the types of habitats seen throughout Illinois. Live animals from the Nature Museum’s Living Collections such as salamanders, turtles, fish and snakes will be featured, as will informative displays and specimens from the Chicago Academy of Sciences Collections. Additionally, discover what habitats featured in Animal Secrets are thriving in Illinois.

MACY’S 106TH ANNUAL GREAT TREE LIGHTING

November 2, 2013

Join multi-faceted entertainer Nick Cannon to kick off the holiday season in the historic Walnut Room! Joining the celebration this year is Lauren Alaina, American Idol Season 10 runner up, singing two holiday songs. After the tree lighting, meet Nick Cannon and receive his autograph when you purchase a tie on November 2 from his new neckwear line, exclusive to Macy’s as time permits.

Family Fun

Immediately following the Great Tree lighting, visit the kid’s department for face painting, balloon twisting, a visit from Radio Disney and more!

Holiday Windows: “The Magic of Christmas”

The 46th annual animated holiday windows touches on Macy’s history at the State Street store emphasizing the iconic Marshall Field’s traditions of the past, including the Frango mint factory which is new this year, and Macy’s commitment to continuing many of those traditions today.

Children are invited to visit and get their picture taken with Santa Claus. Fun fact: Macy’s SantaLand® has been featured in the State Street store since 1948!
